New Delhi, August 24: Hypocrisy is touching skies after the Anti-CAA voices have started to support the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). This comes as Shiromani Akali Dal leader Manjinder S Sirsa took a major 'U-Turn' and requested the government to amend the CAA act in the country. He made this request at a time when India was evacuating citizens from Afghanistan.
While talking to the private media house, he requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to amend the act and extend the date from 2014 to 2021 in the wake of the Afghanistan crisis.
He said, “I request the PM and the HM to amend the CAA and extend the cut-off date from 2014 to 2021 so that people coming from Afghanistan get benefitted and lead a safe life here and their children are able to study here.”
It should be noted, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) earlier supported an anti-CAA resolution moved by the Amarinder Singh-led Congress government in the Punjab Assembly. Shiromani Akali Dal also backed off from contesting the elections during the Delhi Assembly polls after it was asked by its ally BJP to change its stand on the Citizenship Amendment Act.
Seeing this major U-turn, Amit Malviya, national in-charge of BJP's Information and Technology department slammed Sirsa and said, even the anti-CAA brigade now acknowledges the importance of humanitarian CAA legislation.
“From opposing the CAA to asking for an extension of the CAA cut-off date, even the anti-CAA brigade now acknowledges the importance of humanitarian CAA legislation. The Congress and the Akalis had supported the anti-CAA resolution in the Punjab Assembly,” Malviya tweeted.
