In a historic move, PM Modi govt creates 'Ministry of Co-operation' ahead of Cabinet reshuffle

New Delhi, July 7: The Modi government on Tuesday announced a new ‘Ministry of Co-operation’ for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country. This comes in the backdrop of a Cabinet expansion that is expected to take place on Wednesday evening.

"In a historic move, a separate ‘Ministry of Co-operation’ has been created by the Modi Government for realizing the vision of ‘Sahkar se Samriddhi’. This ministry will provide a separate administrative, legal and policy framework for strengthening the cooperative movement in the country," an official press release said.

It further added that the ministry will "help deepen Co-operatives as a true people-based movement reaching upto the grassroots." It said that in India "a Co-operative based economic development model is very relevant where each member works with a spirit of responsibility."
 
 
The Ministry will work to streamline processes for ‘Ease of doing business’ for co-operatives and enable development of Multi-State Co-operatives (MSCS). "The Central Government has signaled its deep commitment to community based developmental partnership. Creation of a separate Ministry for Co-operation also fulfils the budget announcement made by the Finance Minister," it added.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to reshuffle his council of ministers for the first time since returning to power in 2019. A final announcement in this regard is expected between 5.30 pm and 6 pm on Wednesday. A meeting of the Union Cabinet has been called at 11 am on Wednesday to deliberate on the expansion.
