Earlier in 2020, the Yediyurappa government introduced the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill, amid heavy commotion in the state assembly. Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly strongly opposed the bill. At that time Bommai had stated that the government will increase the capacity of its existing 184 cattle shelters from around 50,000 currently to 200,000.
