New Delhi, June 29: In yet another test-firing, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) successfully carried out the test-firing of a new missile in the Agni series known as the Agni-P. The test was conducted from Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam island off the coast of Balasore in Odisha.
"Various telemetry and radar stations positioned along the eastern coast tracked and monitored the missile. The missile followed textbook trajectory, meeting all mission objectives with high level of accuracy," the DRDO said in a statement.
Agni P is a new generation advanced variant of the Agni class of missiles. It is a canisterised missile that can be launched from rail and road and stored for a longer period. It can be transported across the length and breadth of the country, as per requirements.

The new ballistic missile, which has a range capability between 1,000 and 2,000 kilometres, weighs half of Agni III and has new kinds of propulsion and new guidance. It also comes with the technologies found in the 4000-kilometre range Agni-IV and 5000-kilometer range Agni-V. The new Agni P can be used to target enemy warships in the Indo-Pacific.
Agni I, India's first intermediate-range ballistic missile, is a single stage, solid fuel, road & rail mobile and a Short-range ballistic missile developed by DRDO under Integrated Guided Missile Development Program. It is a single-stage missile which was developed after Kargil War to fill gap between 250 km range of Prithvi-II missile and 2,500 km range of the Agni-II.

Agni I was first launched from a road mobile launcher at Integrated Test Range (ITR) from Wheeler Island, on 25 January 2002. It is a 15 meter tall Agni-I missile, weighing 12 tonnes and is capable of carrying conventional and nuclear warheads of 1,000 kg.
Meanwhile, the DRDO had conducted a successful test-fire of the Pinaka rockets last Friday. The indigenously-developed Enhances Pinaka rockets were tested at Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Chandipur off the Odisha coast.
