Gandhinagar, May 18: In an update to the Cyclone Tauktae and its movements aligned, the cyclone, hitting the Gujarat coast in Saurashtra region between Diu and Una weakened into a very severe cyclonic storm this morning.
India Meteorological Department announced that Cyclone Tauktae has weakened into a "very severe cyclonic storm" from the "extremely severe cyclonic storm".
"The entire eye of the cyclone has now crossed the coast and lies over land. The rear sector of the eye is now entering the land" the IMD tweeted. IMD has further predicted that it will weaken gradually into a cyclonic storm during the next 3 hours.
The process of landfall in Gujarat started on Monday around 9 pm due to which Gujrat witnessed winds with speeds up to 133 kilometers per hour and waves as high as three meters. The road between Somnath district and Diu was blocked due to fallen trees. Army personnel cleared the road and vehicular movement was resumed. A widespread power outage was also reported from Rajula and Jafrabad taluka of Amreli district and Kodinar and Una in Gir Somnath district. The power supply has also disrupted in the coastal districts of Saurashtra due to high-velocity winds and rain
Moreover, IMD has further predicted rain and wind due to cyclones in different parts of Punjab and Haryana because of the cyclone's landfall in Gujarat. The change in weather will be witnessed in Punjab and Haryana on May 19 and 20 May.
