New Delhi, April 24: A day after CJI SA Bobde retired from office on Friday, Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana has been sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of India (CJI).
Justice Ramana took the oath in English in the name of God. President Ram Nath Kovind administered him the oath at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi in a small ceremony due to Covid restrictions. Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad were among those present at the ceremony.
CJI SA Bobde recommended CJI, Justice Ramana's name as his successor in April first week. Following which President released notification regarding his appointment was published on 6 April. CJI, Justice Ramana will have a term till August 26, 2022.
Ramana was born on August 27, 1957, in an agricultural family in Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna District. He has done B.Sc. and Bachelor of Law and enrolled as a lawyer on February 10, 1983.
Before being CJI, Justice Ramana was Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. He was part of the bench that held the office of the CJI under the ambit of the Right to Information Act. He started his career in February 1983 at the Andhra Pradesh High Court. He has also served as the president of the Andhra Pradesh Judicial Academy. After years of service, he was appointed as the permanent judge of the AP HC in 2000.
Justice Ramana was part of a bench that ruled that suspension of the Internet in Jammu and Kashmir should be reviewed immediately. He was also part of the panel of judges which held that the Chief Justice's office comes under the ambit of the Right to Information Act.
