London, Mar 16: In his first major international trip after the exit of UK from the European Union, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be visiting India at the end of April. According to the statement of UK Prime Minister's office, the trip will be a part of efforts to boost UK's opportunities in the region.

British PM Johnson had planned an Indian trip in January and was invited by the Indian PM Narendra Modi as the Chief guest for the Republic Day parade. PM Johnson's Jan visit was a part of efforts to speed up trade talks between the two nations. However, due to the increasing surge of COVID 19 infections and a new strain of the virus making its way to emerge in the UK, the visit was cancelled.

According to the UK PM's office, after the cancellation of the Jan visit PM Johnson had hoped to rearrange the visit before Britain hosted the meeting of leaders from the Group of Seven (G7) rich nations in June, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is due to attend as a visitor. According to the recent statements of the Johnson govt, the British govt has planned to 'tilt' its focus towards the Indo-Pacific region, as part of its Integrated Review of govt policy for the coming years. The fact that the area increasingly represents the geopolitical centre of the world, becomes the cause of tilt in the policy of Britain in the post-brexit world.

The British govt has already started taking steps in the same direction as in the month of Feb, Britain made a formal request to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), seeking membership of the 11-country bloc to open new avenues for post-Brexit trade and influence. Besides the UK has also applied to become a dialogue partner of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
