'No Khichadification' : One step ahead, for integration of Modern Medicine with AYUSH

New Delhi, Feb 9: The Ministry of AYUSH has undertaken various initiatives for harmonization of both sectors of modern medicine and AYUSH system of medicine. According to the recent statement, the ministry maintains that there is no status gap between modern medicine and AYUSH since both the systems are working in collaboration with integrated approach to address the healthcare in the country.

Through the latest update that the Ministry of AYUSH has shared, the Central govt has adopted a strategy of co-location of AYUSH facilities at Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs) and District Hospitals (DHs), thus enabling choice to the patients for different systems of medicines under single window. The engagement of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy) paramedics and their training is supported by the Department of Health & Family Welfare, while the Ministry of AYUSH provides the support for AYUSH infrastructure, equipments and medicines, under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM).
 
 
The Ministry of AYUSH has collaborated with Directorate General of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in order to implement the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) for health promotion, prevention and management of Non-communicable diseases and 'Lifestyle related' disorders. The ministry has involved its three research councils of Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine (CCRUM) and Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH) in various districts across the country for effective implementation of the programme.
 
 
The CCRAS conducts research utilizing integrated clinical research protocols adopting Ayurveda parameters and the parameters of conventional bio-medicines. The protocols are developed with an expert consultation of both Allopathic and Ayurveda experts. Research studies of Ayurveda intervention for efficacy and safety are conducted at reputed hospitals. CCRAS has conducted many feasibility operational studies to integrate Ayurveda and Allopathy that have shown encouraging results. The CCRH has conducted studies at setup of Modern Medicine or comparison with modern medicine either standalone or add-on Homoeopathy on different clinical conditions such as Dengue, Acute Encephalitis Syndrome, Diabetic foot ulcer, alcohol dependence, Acute Ottis media, COVID 19. The results of these studies are encouraging with benefits from standalone or add-on Homoeopathy.
 
 
Further for the integration of Yoga in mainstream medical care, the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga under the Ministry of AYUSH is running 4 Yoga Therapy Centres at Govt Medicine Hospitals in Delhi at Vallabbhai Patel Chest Institut, Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberclosis, National Institute of Tuberclosis and Respiratory Disease, and Institute of Behaviour and Allied Sciences. Also in order to establish synergy between Siddha System and modern medicine, National Institute of Siddha, Chennai under the Ministry of AYUSH has entered into an MoU with organizations such as National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR), AIIMS Raipur and others for integration of the traditional medical science with modern medicine.
 
With the recent release, the ministry has stressed on its motive to integrate AYUSH sciences with modern medical science and also shared a detailed report of the ministry's efforts towards harmonizing the sciences in order to achieve the mutual aim of providing effective medical measures to minimize increasing risks of diseases.
