Sonowal inaugurates Assam’s first heliport at Majuli Island

Guwahati, Feb 5: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Thursday inaugurated the state’s first heliport at world famous Majuli Island, the largest river island, to attract the foreign and domestic tourists to the island. Sonowal also inaugurated the Guest House here.

The heliport and guest house were built with the aim to develop tourism infrastructure and attract foreign as well as domestic tourists to Majuli. Majuli is the biggest river island situated within the Brahmaputra River in Assam. It also houses the oldest Satra of Assam. 

The Twitter handle of Chief Minister's Office Assam share the news of the inauguration. The Twitter post read, "With the aim to develop tourism infrastructure and attract foreign as well as domestic tourists to Majuli, CM Shri @sarbanandadonowal inaugurated the state's 1st Heliport and a Guest House at Garamur of the river island district."

According to reports Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Wednesday inaugurated the academic program of Majuli University of Culture at Bongaon, Majuli. He also announced a financial grant of Rs. 10 lakh for the infrastructure development of Pub Majuli College, where classes of the university would be held till its permanent campus comes up.

He also said that the university has the duty of taking the lead in showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the state on a global level.

The Majuli university would award degree in Masters of Arts in Assamese and other indigenous languages of North East India, History, one year PG Diploma in Manuscript Studies, PG Diploma in Heritage Studies and Conservation, One Year PG Diploma in Yoga and Physical Health, One Year PG Diploma in Mask Making and Sculpture and Six-month certification course in Mising Language. 106 students have taken admission in the university for its first academic session.

Meanwhile, the 15th Finance Commission has recommended more than Rs 1,000 crore for the construction of a new embankment-cum-road around Majuli. The embankment-cum-road will solve the perennial problem of erosion of Majuli. It will also boost road travel around the island.

Sonowal also announced that the construction of Jorhat-Majuli bridge, connecting Jorhat and Majuli, would start by February 20. The CM had also announced that State government would set up Sati Radhika Multi-purpose project in Majuli.

Earlier, the Chief Minister had informed that 16 thousand indigenous people of Majuli were granted land pattas. Chief Minister Sarbanada Sonowal represents Majuli in the Assam Legislative Assembly.
