Union Cabinet approves President's rule in Puducherry

New Delhi, February 25: Amid the ongoing political crisis in Puducherry, the Union Cabinet imposed President's rule in the UT. Union cabinet's approval comes after the Congress-led government in Union Territory failed to prove their majority during the floor test.

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the decision during the press conference. He said Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayansamy resigned from the post and, no party claimed to form the government and, therefore the LG has recommended suspension of the UT Assembly.

He further added that following the President's assent, the assembly will be dissolved, and further necessary steps for administrative work in Puducherry would be taken soon.
 
He also informed that the model code of conduct was expected to come into effect soon after the Election Commission announces the dates for elections there, along with four states.

What is the president's rule?
The President’s rule is imposed in accordance with Article 356 of the Constitution. It is imposed when a state government is unable to function as per the Constitutional provisions.
 
On Monday, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayanaswamy submitted his resignation to Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan as his government lost the majority ahead of the floor test in the Assembly.
Besides this Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Puducherry to inaugurate several development projects.
