Srinagar, Dec 1: Polling for 43 constituencies in the second phase of election for District Development Council (DDC) in J&K were peacefully conducted on Dec 1. The State Election Commissioner K.K Sharma reported that all the arrangements had been made already to conduct the DDC elections in smooth and peaceful manner.
The contest is dominantly between the newly launched People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration, BJP and Apni Party flown by J&K former Finance Minister Altaf Bukhari.
For second phase of the DDC polls, out of the total 280 constituencies in the UT of J&K, voting has concluded in 43 constituencies, which include 25 from Kashmir and 18 from the Jammu Division. There are total 321 candidates in the electoral fray including 196 from Kashmir and 125 from Jammu division for DDC elections in Phase II.
For the second phase of polls, a total of 3,77,401 voters including 2,01,792 males and 1,75,609 females out of 7,95,118 voters, voted to choose their representatives in their respective councils and the polling was held on 2142 polling stations including 1305 from Kashmir division and 837 from Jammu division. The Jammu division recorded an average voter turnout of 65.54% with Poonch district recording the highest percentage of 75.07% followed by Jammu district with 69.97%. The lowest turnout in Jammu division was in Kathua district which recorded 60.10%.
In case of the Kashmir division, 33.34 % of voter turnout was recorded. The Bandipora district recorded highest polling at 69.66 % followed by Kupwara District at 58.69% and Ganderbal with around 49.14% polling in the second phase of elections.
