Kazakhstan's 29th Anniversary as a Sovereign Independent Nation

Nur Sultan, Dec 16: Kazakhstan is celebrating today its 29th anniversary as a sovereign independent nation. Events have been held traditionally on Independence Day around the country. However, this year most of the events are being held online due the pandemic.

Congratulating Kazakhstanis on Independence Day First President of Kazakhstan-Elbasy Nursultan Nazarbayev noted that on December 16, 1991 Kazakhstan became an independent country.
 
In an attempt to keep unity within the Soviet Union, the country had held a referendum on Mar 16 , 1991. Kazakhstan voted 95 per cent in favor of a new Union of Sovereign States.
 
After the aborted coup d'état in August, the Supreme Soviet .i.e. Kazakhstan passed the Constitutional Independence Law of Republic of Kazakhstan on Dec 16, 1991. Despite the swift collapse of the Soviet Union, Kazakhstan was the last to declare its independence.
 
India was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Kazakhstan. Diplomatic relations were established in Feb 1992. The Embassy of India was opened in Almaty in May 1992 and the Embassy of Kazakhstan in New Delhi in 1993.
 
Relations between India and Kazakhstan are ancient and historical going back to more than 2000 years. There has been a constant and regular flow of trade in goods and, more importantly, exchange of ideas and cultural influences.
