Patna, Nov 3: The voting is underway for the second phase of Bihar Assembly Elections in which over 2.85 crore voters are eligible to decide the fate of nearly 1,500 candidates across 94 assembly segments on Tuesday. Until 5 pm, around 51.82 percent of eligible voters exercised their votes. The polling is being continued till 6 pm.
Maner has seen the highest turnout with 61.5 per cent while lowest turnout was recorded in Kumhrar constituency with 33.15 per cent.
Among the notable leaders is RJD’s Tejashwi Yadav, the opposition Grand Alliance’s Chief Ministerial candidate. He is seeking re-election from Raghopur in Vaishali district which he had wrested back for his party from the BJP’s Satish Kumar in 2015. Tejashwi’s elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav is also in fight who after shifting his base from Mahua in Vaishali is trying his luck from Hasanpur in Samastipur district.
The last day witnessed hectic campaigning as Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed four back-to-back rallies in support of NDA candidates. BJP candidates are in the fray in 46 of the seats, while another 43 are being contested by those with JD(U) tickets.
A voter turnout of 55.69% was recorded in the first phase of Bihar assembly polls held on October 28, the Election Commission said in its provisional data. Polling was held 71 assembly constituencies amid tight security and COVID-19 guidelines in place.
Since this is the first election in the country amid COVID pandemic situation, the special provisions at the polling booths in consideration of the situation are of significance. Therefore, thermal screening of all persons is being carried out and sanitizers have been made available at all locations during polling and all polling booths have been sanitized.
