Chennai, Aug. 1: In India, Monsoon is sufficient for quenching the thirst of every citizen. But unfortunately, the natural distribution of monsoon is uneven in India. Tamil Nadu is also suffering from water scarcity. Solving this water issue and saving millions of liters of drinking water, Chennai is all set for supplying recycled sewage water for industrial use.
With this effort, Chennai will become the first Indian city to do so.
Taking a constructive step, a new sewage treatment plant is being built in Kodungaiyur area of Chennai which is going to be completed until this week. This plant will sent water to the industry, which will ensure the fresh drinking water reserved for residential use.
According to an official statement, the Metro Water Board officials said that the move will help the city in tackling the water crisis.
A second treatment plant, which is under construction in Koyambedu, is likely to be operational by September. These two treatment plants will be able to treat 90 million liters of sewage per day (MLD) through the reverse osmosis process. The capacity of these two plants will be increased to 120 MLD by July 2020.
As per the statement, generally the sewage water was released to the rivers in the city after secondary treatment. However, in the coming days, it will be sent to the treatment plants for the third level of treatment, which will make the water fit enough for industrial usage.
