New Delhi, June 7: In order to accelerate the efficiency of Indian Railways, Indian Railways have placed a significant order for 25, more energy efficient, retrofitted electrical locomotives from the public sector Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). The achievement is significant since it comes a day before Environment Day is being celebrated the world over. This follows a major technological leap achieved by the BHEL whereby the kinetic energy of the train while in braking mode, is re-converted into electrical energy.

This is later fed back into the electric grid of the railways. Earlier this energy was being wasted in locomotives in the form of heat. BHEL has always worked closely with Indian Railways and had supplied 20 electric locomotives last year and 10 more locomotives are being supplied this year. The company has augmented its capability to manufacture and supply around 100 locomotives per annum.

Also, Railways have been seriously committed to Environment Sustainability in a big way. Under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, in the previous government, the thrust on Swachchta has been immense. The results of Swachchta Campaign are discernible. Railways have acted as a game changer as introduction of bio-toilets in the trains has made the length and breadth of the country stench free.

Also, Railways will continue to make efforts in promoting Cleanliness across its network. In promoting Green environment and renewable energy, Railways have taken steps like accelerating electrification at a fast pace and installing solar panels in Railway premises. Railways look forward to continuing to collaborate with TERI in seeking environment-friendly techniques
