Panaji, June 17: Welcoming the rains in the ensuing monsoon season, Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant held his ink to all Ministers and MLAs, seeking their active participation for Vanamahotsava by taking up tree plantation activities across the state.
“We need to unite to improve the green cover of Goa by taking up tree plantation activities in all possible areas with the involvement of every member of the society”, the letter read.
Further informing abount the detailed programme of Vanamahotsav, CM Sawant said, “I have asked the Forest Department to work out a detailed programme for Vanamahotsav during July to September this year to cover all cities and villages with local communities. The Forest Department will work towards meeting requirements of saplings as per the choice of people and site specific criteria and also distribute plants free to the individuals and institutions.”
“This would result in Goa preserving and improving its green cover and enjoy the nature’s gift of its pristine forest”, he signed off.
The constant falling of trees in India has been a problem for a long time and Vanmahotsav is important in creating awareness of the issues. According to the Forest Department, for every tree fallen ten tree saplings should be planted to make up for its loss. The festival also highlights the need for planting and tending of trees as one of the best ways to prevent global warming and reduce pollution
