This Lok Sabha creates record; will welcome 78 women this tenure

New Delhi, May 29: Hardly there are hours left for Narendra Modi to become Prime Minister of India. This government has created many records like NDA has unfurled victory flag on nearly 300 seats. Likewise, a record has been noted of 78 women candidates have been elected to the Lok Sabha in the recently held general elections. According to the Election Commission, the number has grown from the previous 62 women who were elected to the 16th Lok Sabha in 2014.


 

If we see the graph of women MPs elected since 1951 when the country had its first general elections in, twenty-four women were elected to the Lower House, and since then, the number has been increasing.

1957 saw a decreasing number than the previous election; it had 22 members. While 1962 saw a good hike that is 31 women in Lok Sabha. 1967 and 1971 had the same number of women MPs that is 29.

 

The lowest numbers of women in Lok Sabha was seen in the year 1977 that is only 19 members.

After that, 1980 had a bit increasing graph that is 28. 1984-85 had 43 women in the lower house.

1989 again saw a downfall that is 29 members. 1991-92 had 39 women MPs.

In the years 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014 Lok Sabha welcomed 40, 43, 49, 45, 59 and 62 respectively.
