In the upcoming election, the “Chowkidar’ dual battle between Congress and BJP seems to remind of the ‘Chaiwala’ episode of the 2014 election. Coining these terms, Congress seems to have decided not to assault the ruling party as such but to go for a personal attack on PM Narendra Modi. If the election turns as a presidential selection between Modi and Rahul Gandhi, it is the Congress which has invited it. The ‘Chaiwala’ or ‘Chowkidar’ are the usual professions in the life of common people. The way in which the Congress is using them seems to attach some kind of a derogatory meaning to it. It doesn’t come as a big surprise if we consider the fact that almost all of the caucus which decides the Congress strategy is essentially ‘Darbari’, with no roots or connect in the masses. Catching exactly this weakness, Modi used it as a ‘Chai Pe Charcha’ campaign in 2014 resulting in Modi’s photos adored in ‘Chaiwala’ shops which abound in every nook and corner of Indian cities. This time around, it will not be a surprise to see them at the gates of every housing society where the ‘Chowkidar’ sits.
What is really surprising is the fact that even on Twitter, which is otherwise considered to be the forum of elites as compared to Facebook or WhatsApp, the #mainBhiChowkidar campaign seems to have decisively beaten the #ChowkidarChorHai accusation of Congress. In the next round of battle where Congress responded yesterday with #EkHiChowkidarChorHai hash-tag, BJP supporters responded with #ChowkidarPhirSe creating a decisive wave in favor of Modi as a candidate for Prime Minister.
The analysis of data clearly shows that on all counts i.e. the time required in completing approx. 1000 tweets, the number of re-tweets and number of favorite tweets, the Tweeple world has given a decisive verdict in favor of Narendra Modi.
