Mumbai, December 28: Veteran Political cartoonist Vikas Sabnis passed away last night in Mumbai due to cardiac arrest at the age of 69. He was unwell and undergoing treatment since last few days.
Vikas Sabnis had completed 50 years of illustrious career in 2018. Inspired by egendary cartoonists R K Laxman and Bal Thackeray, he had started his career in 1968. Since then, for over 50 years, Sabnis has worked as a staff cartoonist at various newspapers, including the Times of India and the Mid-day. He made caricatures and political cartoons on various subjects and issues. These ranges from local to international levels.
Sabnis often described the 80s and 90s as the golden era of cartooning. Born on July 12, 1950, he graduated from the prestigious Sir JJ School of Art and has also worked with legendary journalist Russi Karanjia. Bal Thackeray would himself draw cartoons for 'Marmik', a political satire weekly launched by him. However, due to his increasing political commitments, he later hand-picked Sabnis for the job.
In a career spanning 50 years, Sabnis made poignant comments on the socio-political developments through his cartoons.
Sabnis is survived by his wife and son.
