New Delhi, December 20: Delhi's Tis Hazari court today sentenced Kuldeep Singh Sengar to life imprisonment till the end of life in Unnao rape and abduction case. District Judge Dharmesh Sharma also imposed a fine of Rs 25 lakh in the case and also directed the rape survivor be paid Rs 10 lakh as compensation.

The co-accused Shashi Singh, who allegedly took the minor to Sengar, has been acquitted on "benefit of the doubt". The case was heard on a day-to-day basis at Delhi's Tis Hazari court after it was transferred to Delhi from a Lucknow court on the Supreme Court's directions.

The case was initially pursued by the Uttar Pradesh Police. However, alleging police inaction, the victim had approached the Allahabad High Court in February last year and then attempted self-immovable outside the residence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on April 8, 2018. Days later, the case was transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for further probe. The matter then came up before the Supreme Court in August this year, while all the cases pertaining to the victim and her family members were shifted to Delhi for court proceedings.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for kidnapping and raping a woman in Unnao in 2017. The court had on Monday convicted Sengar for rape under the Indian Penal Code and the Pocso Act for the offence by a public servant committing penetrative sexual assault against a child. The rape survivor was a minor when she was assaulted.
