Thiruvananthapuram, August 17: As flood fury in Kerala continues to disrupt normal life, the rainfall in the state has shown no sign of remorse affecting and destructing the entire state. The Army, Navy and Air Force have been in constant touch with the people rescuing them from the horrendous flood to the relief camps.
With the increasing incessant rainfall pouring in God’s own country, Kerala has issued red alert in 14 districts. Taking cognizance of the situation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit the state later in the evening to take stock of the condition in the state. The Centre has also decided to send 35 more teams of the National Disaster Response Force to the state.
Apart from this the Defence Ministry has left no stones unturned in helping the people stranded in the flood hit area. Road connectivity has been restored at 18 locations including the construction of 11 temporary bridges by the Indian Army. Along with this the team is also running medical camps at various locations.
Until now the team has rescued more than 3000 persons and more than 750 persons have been provided medical care by the armed forces. The India Coast Guard helicopter rescued 6 stranded & distressed people including a child and 2 elderly women in a short while from now from flood affected Kadungallor village & shifted them to Relief camp at Aluva.
Ministry of Defence has decided to deploy at least 1 helicopter at each district headquarter in Kerala. The Air Force has been instructed the same. Except for extreme weather conditions, these deployments should complete by tonight as said by Defence Minister Nirmala Sithraman. The department has also deployed motor boats, life jackets, life buoys, raincoats, gum boots.
Cabinet Secretary took stock of the situation, preparedness, and rescue and relief operations and directed that immediate and continued assistance be provided to Kerala to meet this crisis. Government of India is fully supporting the State of Kerala and the Cabinet Secretary also directed that relief material including supply of drinking water, dry food packets and powdered milk should also be made available to Kerala.
