Sindhudurg, May 2: Maharashtra has its jewel called Konkan which enthrals every heart, has good news! A new airport will be inaugurated in Maharashtra at Sindhudurg district in 2018. The airport will be located at Parule Chipi and expected to provide air connectivity to the Konkan region, parts of Goa, north Karnataka and western Maharashtra.

At present, Maharashtra has three functional international and 13 domestic airports. The airport has received in-principle approval and environmental clearance from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Ministry of Environment and Forests respectively.
It is being constructed by IRB Sindhudurg Airport Pvt Ltd on a design-build-finance-operate-transfer (DBFOT) basis for MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation). The airport construction would cost around Rs 520 crore.
The airport will have capacity to handle 200 departing and 200 arriving passengers during peak hours. It will have expansion facilities to serve up to 400 departing and 400 arriving passengers without additional construction and also have facilities to serve international charter flights. Sindhudurg airport will have a 2,500-meter runway with the provision of future development.
With the construction of taxi way, apron and isolation bay being completed, work on airfield ground lighting, passenger terminal, technical and ancillary buildings, ATC tower is in progress. Work on the project is expected to be complete by September this year.
