Top IPS Officer, former Maha ATS Chief Himanshu Roy commits suicide

Mumbai, May 11: In a heartbreaking incident, today Himanshu Roy a top Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and a former chief of the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad chief, committed suicide.

Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Maharashtra Police, Himanshu Roy committed suicide by shooting himself with his service revolver at his south Mumbai residence, police sources said. He was rushed to the nearby Bombay Hospital in Marine Lines where he was declared dead.

Himanshu Roy, was battling cancer and had a relapse was on leave for over a year, had even visited the United States of America for treatment.

A 1988-batch IPS officer, Roy handled many high profile cases including the alleged Rs 5600 Crores payment scam at the National Spot Exchange Ltd (NSEL) and the IPL betting racket scam in which he arrested the former ICC chairman N Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. As the Chief of the Mumbai Crime Branch, he was at the helm of journalist Jyotrimoy Dey’s murder case. Roy was instrumental in the 2013 IPL spot-fixing investigation and other high-profile crime cases such as the firing on Dawood's brother Iqbal Kaskar's driver Arif, and the murders of journalist J Dey's murder, Vijay Palande, and Laila Khan. His team had arrested a former senior journalist Jigna Vora in the case.

Roy handled many top positions in the Maharashtra Police including being its Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) chief. Roy's post-mortem is expected to take place shortly.
