Bhopal, March 30: A big relief to the people reaching their retirement age in Madhya Pradesh. As good news to the employees, the state government has decided to raise the age bar of retirement from 60 years to 62 years. There are about five lakh government employees in the state.

Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan made the announcement today while he said a number of state government employees were unable to get promotion because of a case on reservation in promotions pending in the Supreme Court. “We will not allow any employee to retire without getting their due promotion,” he said. “This is why we have decided to increase the retirement age from 60 to 62 years.”

In May 2016, the Madhya Pradesh government had challenged a Jabalpur High Court order that had declared unconstitutional the state government’s provision for reservation in promotions for employees from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. The Supreme Court had ordered a status quo in the matter in October 2017.

He also said there have been cases where an employee retires without getting due promotions.

Therefore the decision to level up the age bar has been welcomed as an added advantage for the people of the state. After Chhattisgarh government’s decision, it was speculated that Madhya Pradesh too could make an announcement in this regard as already it (retirement age) is different for school teachers, college or university professors and doctors (specialists) in the state.

The state already has bigger retirement age limit in case of teachers and doctors. The retirement age is 65 years for university or college teachers and doctors (specialists), while for the school teachers it is 62.
