#OperationInsaniyat : India sends second humanitarian assistance of 62,000 family packs for Rohingyas

Dhaka, September 28: In response to the humanitarian crisis being faced on account of the large influx of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh, India has decided to extend assistance to Bangladesh. A second tranche of relief supplies under Operation Insaniyat arrived this morning at Chittagong Port on board Indian Naval Ship GHARIAL.

“The relief material, comprising of 62,000 family packs, was handed over by the High Commissioner of India to Deputy Commissioner of Chittagong. Each 15-kilo family pack gifted by ‘the people of India’ has been specially configured to meet the essential requirements of a family of five to six members,” said High Commision of India. 

The relief material consists of items required urgently by the affected people, namely rice, pulses, sugar, salt, cooking oil, tea, ready to eat noodles, biscuits, mosquito nets etc.

“The total relief material comprising of 71,200 family packs has been planned to cater for all families who have recently been displaced from Myanmar. The Government of India continues to support and stand besides the Govt of Bangladesh in this hour of need,” statement added.

Notably, INS GHARIAL is a ‘Landing ship tank’ type of vessel designed for an amphibious operations role. The ship was indigenously manufactured at the Hindustan Shipyard, Vishakhapatnam in 1997. It can carry up to 6,600 tons of load. The ship has participated in a number of missions including humanitarian relief operations. The ship is commanded by Commander James Rebeira, a second generation officer hailing from Cochin, Kerala.

Meanwhile, the first tranche of relief materials was flown in to Chittagong by Indian Air Force heavy lift aircraft C-17 Globemaster-III in two sorties on 14 and 15 September 2017. The aircraft delivered a total of 107 tons of relief material consisting of 9206 family packs. The relief material has since been handed over to District administration in Cox’s Bazar for distribution to the displaced persons.
