Mumbai, Jan 3: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Director, Manish Ranalkar, announced on Friday (Jan 3) the launch of a special webpage dedicated to providing real-time weather updates for the upcoming Mahakumbh Mela.
"For the upcoming Mahakumbh Mela, IMD launched a special webpage today which will give weather updates every 15 minutes, and the weather forecast will also be available on the website twice a day," Ranalkar told the media. Elaborating further, he shared that Mahakumbh has been designated as a temporary district for the event. "Mahakumbh has been established as a temporary district. We have installed three new AWS (Automatic Weather Stations) in it, and weather updates from the Mahakumbh District will be available on the webpage every 15 minutes. Two digital displays will also be set up in the district for people to get real-time weather updates," Ranalkar added.
In a vibrant display of tradition, the Sadhus of the Mahanirvani Akhara marked their arrival at the Mahakumbh camp amidst the rhythmic beating of 'damaru' (a small two-headed drum) and chants in praise of Mahadev. Meanwhile, the seers of Atal Akhara entered the camp in a grand procession, warmly welcomed by police officials with garlands. Covered in ashes, adorned with garlands, riding horses, and carrying their Akhara's flags, the seers highlighted the cultural richness of the event.
Vishwasanand Saraswati, Acharya of Atal Akhara, emphasized the spiritual and social significance of the Mahakumbh. "Everyone should come to the Kumbh Mela to witness the unity of the people gathered here and try to promote and establish similar unity in their own countries," he said.
Spiritual leader Jagadguru Narendracharyaji Maharaj, reflecting on his participation in the 2019 Mahakumbh Mela, praised the preparations for this year’s event. The Mahakumbh, held once every 12 years, is set to begin on January 13 and conclude on February 26 in Prayagraj. The primary bathing rituals, known as Shahi Snan (royal baths), are scheduled for January 14 (Makar Sankranti), January 29 (Mauni Amavasya), and February 3 (Basant Panchami).
Why is IMD's move important?
The IMD’s initiative to provide real-time weather updates is particularly vital for the millions of pilgrims attending the Mahakumbh. Given the vast scale of the event and the unpredictable winter weather, accurate information can help pilgrims plan their travel and bathing schedules effectively, ensuring their safety and convenience. Real-time updates about temperature, rainfall, or fog conditions will enable devotees to prepare appropriately, especially during the Shahi Snan rituals, which often witness massive gatherings at the ghats. Such timely weather forecasts play major role in preventing mishaps, providing a more comfortable and secure experience for the attendees.
