New Delhi, May 13: In what can be called an absurd statement, Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury sparked a major controversy by stating that the grand old party will “stop attacking Adani-Ambani if they give money to them”.
In a video that went viral, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha was heard mentioning that the party attacks Indian Business tycoons (Adani and Ambani) in Parliament as they don’t give sacks of money to them.
Chowdhary further in the video could be heard saying that Congress leaders would stop mentioning the names of Ambani and Adani if they start sending money to them. "If I had got it (money from Adani-Ambani), I would have been very happy. I am a BPL (Below Poverty Line) MP in need of funds to run my campaign. Forget tempo, even if Adani sent a bag full of money to my home, it would have been enough," the Congress leader said in a fun banter during an interview with a reporter.
When asked why he raises his voice against the industrialists in Parliament, Adhir Ranjan said, "Because they don't send (money), that's why we speak (against them)... They should send it. We will consider after that (about whether to speak against them)."
This came after PM Modi, earlier this week, targeted the Congress and Rahul Gandhi by saying that the party had stopped speaking against Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani. He challenged him to disclose the amount of “money he received from Ambani-Adani”, and the nature of the “deal” he has cut with them in the election season.
The Congress party has fielded Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury from Baharampur in West Bengal. The constituency is going to vote in the fourth phase of Lok Sabha election 2024, scheduled to take place on May 13. He will fight against BJP candidate Nirmal Kumar from the seat and ex-Indian cricketer Yusuf Pathan, fielded by Trinamool Congress.
