India gears up for 'One Airspace', to unify entire airspace under a single command

New Delhi, April 8: In a significant development, India is aiming to unify its airspace under a single command to cut emissions, reduce costs for airlines and improve safety by reducing the workload of air traffic controllers and pilots.
This comprehensive program, projected to span over eight years, includes infrastructure development, controller training, and migration to the new system. It will eventually will enable airlines to enhance efficiency and safety.
Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has in the past highlighted the significant growth in the Indian aviation sector, with projections indicating a doubling of the current aircraft fleet in the next five years.
The huge move by India will consolidate control over the airspace spanning 2.8 million square nautical miles, currently divided into four regions, under a unified command center in Nagpur.
Reports suggest that the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated the process by inviting bids from consultants to obtain technology from global companies and implement advanced technology solutions for a single air traffic management system.
