A CPI(M) worker was killed and three injured when a crude bomb they were allegedly making exploded Friday in Kerala’s Kannur district. The Congress and the BJP alleged that the four were associated with the CPI(M), but the state’s ruling party distanced itself from the men.
The blast took place close to the venue of a Congress election convention scheduled to take place Saturday. Shafi Parambil, Congress candidate for Vadakara LS seat is slated to take part in the convention. He is set to take on CPI(M) leader K K Shailaja. The deceased was identified as 27-year-old Sherin. Of the 3 injured, V P Vineesh, 39, is on life support. According to police, the blast took place at an under-construction house where the 4 were allegedly making crude bombs. Shafi demanded the CPI(M) explain who the bombs were meant to target.
CPI(M) state secretariat member and legislator T P Ramakrishnan said the dead and the injured had earlier cooperated with the party, but they did not have any links with the party at present. “We had kept them away from the party,” he said.
The Congress, however, brought up a photo showing Sherin with Shailaja during recent election campaigning.
The BJP also targeted the CPI(M) with party’s Kerala in-charge, Prakash Javadekar, saying, “It is a shocking incident that there was an explosion where CPI(M) workers were making bombs. They were not making firecrackers, they were making regular bombs used by terrorists.”
