Two non-locals including Sikh carpenter shot dead by terrorists in J&K's Srinagar, first targeted killing in 2024

Srinagar, Feb 8: In a targeted attack on civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, two non-locals including a Sikh carpenter were shot dead by terrorists in the Shaheed Gunj area of Srinagar late Wednesday evening.

This targetted attack was the first militant attack on non-local residents in the Valley this year. The militants have regularly targeted the non-local workers in the Valley since the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status in 2019.

On Wednesday militants fired at two men from close range in Srinagar. The victims were rushed to the hospital, where Amritpal Singh (31) was declared dead on arrival and another person identified as Rohit Masih (25) who also came under fire succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning. Both Masih and Singh were workers from Amritsar, Punjab.

Earlier, the J&K police said in a post on X, "#Terrorists fired upon 2 persons identified as Amritpal Singh & Rohit, R/O Amritsar at Shaheed Gunj Sgr. In this #terror incident, Amritpal Singh succumbed to his injuries while Rohit has been shifted to Hospital for treatment. Area cordoned off."


Immediately after the attack, a joint team of the J-K Police rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area to trace and arrest the attackers.

Since October 2023 only two incidents of targeted killings were reported from the valley. In 2023, a total number of 14 civilians were killed in different incidents of terrorist-related violence while 31 were killed in 2022, 41 in 2021, 38 in 2020, and 44 in 2019.

In Jammu, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha strongly condemned the heinous terror attack on two civilians in Srinagar. He extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the civilian martyred in the attack and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.


In a tweet, the Lt Governor said, “I am deeply shocked and saddened by the heinous terror attack in Srinagar on Amritpal & Rohit from Amritsar. I condemn in strongest terms this brutal act, which has snuffed out an innocent life. In this hour of grief, I convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”
