The woman - now 22 - alleged that Varun Kumar raped her several times in the past five years, promising her marriage. She said that she was 17 when she met Varun Kumar through Instagram in 2019.

Who is Varun Kumar?

Varun Kumar, originally from Himachal Pradesh, shifted to Punjab for hockey. He made his debut for the Indian team in 2017 and won a silver medal at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Varun Kumar was also a part of the team that won gold in the 2022 Asian Games and a member of India's bronze medal-winning team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The Himachal Pradesh government had announced a prize of Rs 1 lakh for him after the Indian Hockey team won the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

An FIR has been registered against Varun Kumar under the POCSO Act. Reports suggest that he is on the run and a search is on to trace him.
