New Delhi, Feb 17: In a major blow to the Congress party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath and his son Nakul might join the BJP, reports have surfaced. Nakul Nath, the Congress MP from Chhindwara, even removed 'Congress' from his profile bio on X.
Notably, after the Gandhi family, Kamal Nath is arguably the tallest veteran of the Congress party's old guard. He has been close to the Nehru-Gandhi family since he entered politics.
What does the BJP say?
Raising speculation over the development, BJP spokesperson and Kamal Nath's former media advisor Narendra Saluja posted a photo of the former Chief Minister and his son in Bhopal and captioned it, "Jai Shri Ram".
Besides, Madhya Pradesh BJP chief VD Sharma on Saturday fuelled the strong speculations saying doors are open for those who feel they can work while believing in party leadership.
When asked about the buzz around Kamal Nath joining the BJP, Sharma said, “You have to ask Kamal Nath ji about this. If someone feels that (they can work) while believing in the leadership and their policy, doors are open for such people".
Sharma claimed that several Congress leaders were upset with the grand old party rejecting the invitation for the 'Pran Pratishtha' ceremony of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya. "So today I am telling you the environment, we have kept our doors open because there are people in Congress who feel that Congress boycotts Bhagwan Shri Ram, India has Ram in its heart. When Congress insults him, then some people are pained by this, who are upset, and they should get a chance. If those whose names you are taking have pain in their hearts, then they are also welcome".
Digvijaya Singh debunks reports
Regarding the speculation, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh said, "Kamal Nath is in Chhindwara...I had a conversation with Kamal Nath last night. He is in Chhindwara," he told ANI, when asked about the rumours.
"The person who started his political career with the Nehru-Gandhi family and he stood together when the entire Janata Party and the then central government were sending Indira Gandhi to jail. How can you expect that person (Kamal Nath) to leave Sonia Gandhi and Indira Gandhi's families. You should not expect it," Singh added.
Since 2019, the Congress party has been rocked with several high profile exits, including RPN Singh and Jitin Prasad. This year, the Maharashtra Congress has lost Milind Deora and Ashok Chavan.
