Indian Navy warship on route to rescue hijacking of ship with 15 Indian crew members onboard, near Somalia's coast

New Delhi, Jan 5: In a swift action, an Indian Navy warship, INS Chennai, is en route to address a hijacking incident involving the vessel 'MV LILA NORFOLK' near Somalia's coast.

The Indian Navy received information about the hijacked Liberian-flagged ship between January 4 and 5. With 15 Indian crew members on board, the Indian Navy is actively monitoring the situation.

The vessel had sent a message on UKMTO portal indicating boarding by approx five to six unknown armed personnel in the evening on January 4.


Responding swiftly to the developing situation, Indian Navy launched an MPA and has diverted INS Chennai deployed a surveillance aircraft, also known as Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) to assist the vessel. Moreover, communication has also been established with the crew.

The ongoing situation is under close monitoring with coordination among various agencies and the multi-national force (MNF) in the region, media reports highlighted citing the Indian Navy.
