In yet another incident shaking the nerves of Maharashtra, a six-year old Dalit Hindu girl was sexually abused for over five days by Altaf Mehboob Qureshi in Maharashtra's Devani, Dist Latur. The incident has sparked outrage in the area. Local residents have demanded that the accused be brought to justice.
The news came to light after the victim's mother filed a police complaint against the accused at Latur's Devani police station. In her complaint, she said that Qureshi had sexually assaulted the girl over a period of five days, from January 15 to 19.

The Police have booked the accused, Altaf Mehboob Quresh, under various sections of the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Act. Police has imposed IPC section 376 AB, 367(2), 377, 506, sections 3(1)(w)(i), 3(2), 3(v) of the SC-ST Act,.

Intentionally touches a woman belonging to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe, knowing that she belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe, when such act of touching is of a sexual nature and is without the recipient's consent
In her complaint to the police, the girl's mother said that the accused, Altaf Mehboob Qureshi, lived in front of her house. He would often ask the girl to bring him shampoo packets from the shop. However, the girl would refuse and start crying. When the mother asked the girl what was wrong, the girl tearfully told her that Qureshi had been sexually assaulting her.
As per the FIR, the victim is taking primary education at a government school and the accused, Altaf Mehboob Qureshi, lives near her house. On January 20, Qureshi comes to their shop and asks the girl to bring him shampoo packets. The girl refused to give him so and started crying. When the mother asked the girl, the victim narrated the whole incident to her.
As per the traumatised victim, Qureshi was performing oral sex with the girl. She also said that Qureshi threatened to kill her if she told anyone. Soon, the mother contacted her relatives and filed a complaint with the Devani police station. Acting upon this, the Devani police have arrested Qureshi and are investigating the case. Further investigation is being conducted by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Nitin Katekar and Police Inspector Vishnu Gute.
The incident has sparked outrage in the area. Local residents have demanded that the accused be brought to justice. In protest of the assault, a candlelight march was held in Walandi village on January 28. A road blockade was also held, and a bandh was called in Nalegaon village in Chakar taluka on January 30.
The residents of Nalegaon were outraged by the incident and demanded that the man be arrested and punished. They also demanded that the victim's family be provided with government assistance. A memorandum was submitted to the authorities demanding justice for the victim.The authorities have assured the residents that the case will be investigated thoroughly and the guilty will be punished.
