"Valmiki Ramayana and Ramcharitmanas admittedly form an important part of ancient Indian literature,
but these cannot be said to be historical records to incontrovertibly prove the existence of the characters and occurrences of events depicted therein"
This is not an argument made by any Communist leader. Neither, it is a part of any academic exercise. These lines are picked up from an affidavit. This affidavit was submitted to the Supreme Court in September 2007. The government was headed by Manmohan Singh and the lawyer was Kapil Sibbal. Readers are mature enough to understand what this means. No explanation is needed.
It is not surprising that Congress has now joined the Communist chorus, which always remained indifferent towards Hindu sentiments. This is an inevitable stage for Congress, which is drawing intellectual inspiration from Communist ideology since the 2014 debacle, a series of defeats thereafter, and having no hope for the rejuvenation of the party shortly.

After keeping secret its decision on presence for the consecration ceremony, Congress has announced that party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi and leader in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury would not participate. For Congress, the consecration ceremony at Ayodhya is the ‘Political Project of RSS and BJP’. Fortunately, Congress has a minimum amount of decency and sensitivity to decline the 'invitation respectfully’. Congress will send a group of leaders to Ayodhya on January 15, a week before the consecration ceremony, to take the darshan of Ram Lalla. This group will also take a holy dip in the Saryu River before taking the darshan of Ram Lalla.
Declining the invitation ‘respectfully’ and sending a group of leaders to Ayodhya a week before the consecration ceremony, indicates intellectual confusion in Congress. The party does not wish to invite possible Hindu wrath when Lok Sabha elections are a few months ahead. But its gesture is sort of tokenistic or symbolic. Congress is not prepared to give up its `minorities’ on one hand and try to please Hindus on the other. However, it fails to understand that its strategy did not prevent its consistent decline in electoral politics. People are no longer in the mood to entertain Congress’s so-called balancing act. They want simple answers either "Yes" or "No".
By deciding to stay away from the consecration ceremony Congress has once again demonstrated its intellectual bankruptcy. Congress has given full toss to its critics, who would not hesitate to argue that Congress was not willing to see a new temple at Ram Janma Bhoomi, for which generations are struggling. By sending a group of party leaders to Ayodhya a week before the consecration ceremony, Congress has simply underlined that it was not interested in a new temple at the site of Ram Janma Bhoomi.
This is serious as the people believe that the Ayodhya temple symbolizes a new beginning in the history of India. It marks emancipation from aggression for centuries. It is evident of the liberation of the colonial mindset, for which people were eagerly waiting for decades. It is the restoration of self-esteem and is a self-encouraging exercise.
Congress has observed that the consecration ceremony was a political project of the RSS and BJP. What is this discovery? BJP is the only national party, that has supported Ram Janma Bhoomi agitation since the beginning. RSS was very much active in the agitation. The political impact of the Ram Janma Bhoomi agitation was inevitable like any other social happening. For example, the budget has a political impact even though it is purely a financial issue. The Shah Bano case had political impact even though the issue was fundamentally a religious matter. The fact is that Congress was unable to handle the political situation arising out of the Ram Janma Bhoomi agitation, Congress failed to tackle political implications as it never addressed the core issues involved in the Ram Janma Bhoomi agitation. The party continued to be adamant even after realizing that it was a suicidal step. Why is Congress blaming ‘others’ when the fault lies with itself?
Congress always accuses BJP of violating the constitution but simply ignores the reality that BJP or any other organization are exercising their constitutional right to work for their ideology. Congress cannot blame others if it is unable to exercise constitutional rights.
The reality is that Congress has an allergy to Hindu causes. Several such cases can be shown. Allergy for the Hindu cause is the root cause because of which Congress invited its fall. Allergy goes back to the first case, similar to Ayodhya. Congress needs to remember what stand Jawaharlal Nehru had taken on the inauguration of Somnath temple, which was also destroyed by Muslim attackers. Nehru was not merely reluctant for renovate of Somnath temple but opposed the program. He wrote letters to the then President of India Dr Rajendra Prasad, who was very much keen on Somnath. Nehru’s letters show that he was more concerned about his own image than restoration of `Bhartiya Asmita’.
Congress leaders always argue that the lock of Ayodhya temple was opened when Rajiv Gandhi was the Prime Minister. But the lock was opened because of a judicial order and the Gandhi government did not take any initiative. Rajiv Gandhi was trying to compensate for his decision in the Shah Bano case. His government did not appeal the lower court decision out of fear of Hindu anger. The decision was not out of affection for Prabhu Ramchandra but out of political compulsion. Congress cannot run away from the historical fact that Ram Janma Bhoomi was locked because of Nehru’s decision. The then Faizabad district magistrate K K Nair refused to lock the temple in 1949. K K Nair was later suspended and Govind Vallabh's government in Uttar Pradesh locked the temple.
Congress is simply carrying on its family tradition to keep itself away from Ram Janma Bhoomi. In September 2016, Rahul Gandhi visited Ayodhya but did not visit the Ram Janma Bhoomi temple. He went to Hanuman Gadhi, which is at a stone's throw distance from Ram Janma Bhoomi but did not feel it necessary to visit it. Similarly, Priyanka Gandhi visited Ayodhya in March 2019 but stayed away from Ram Janma Bhoomi. Against this backdrop, the absence of Sonia Gandhi and Congress leaders from the consecration ceremony is not surprising. The party is simply following its earlier decisions by blaming RSS and BJP. Congress' challenge to the existence of Prabhu Ramchandra was symbolic. The reality is that Congress always challenged the existence of Hindus. Congress DNA is anti-Hindu and nobody expects it to honour Hindu sentiments.
Akhilesh Yadav is another leader, who has joined the Communist camp. Akhilesh was invited by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) executive president Alok Kumar. However, Akhilesh denied the invitation saying that only people, who know each other, extend the invitation. Akhilesh demonstrated his immaturity and lack of understanding of socially accepted norms by making such statements.
Leaders of Hindu organizations need to be congratulated for showing their maturity by inviting leaders of those political parties, which have been opposing Ram Janma Bhoomi temple. The question arises whether Ram Janma Bhoomi's opponents deserve to be shown such maturity.
One remembers a funny demand made by Kapil Sibbal in the Supreme Court. Sibbal was the lawyer of the litigants in the Ayodhya case. He had requested the Supreme Court to postpone the hearing till 2019 Lok Sabha elections are over. Similar is the situation in 2024 when Congress decided to stay away from consecration ceremonies for political compulsion. It can be only described as
"Ye dar achcha hai, ye dar jaruri hai".
