Reports have it that a Sikh activist group has renamed a part of the Canadian city of Brampton as Khalistan . The authenticity of the news is still being verified, however, reports are also in as the activists are targeting non-Sikhs, including Hindus.
According to the latest reports, a Sikh militant group is blockading a portion of Brampton, renaming it as Khalistan. They are also urging non-Sikh individuals including other Indians to steer clear or be met with deadly force. How much ever the news might be shocking, it is also true that the update has not developed out of the blue. Brampton has been linked with the Khalistan movement since several years now. Here's a look at the Khalistani past of the Canadian city;
Not much earlier but in July this year, a prominent temple in Canada’s Greater Toronto Area or GTA had expressed concern about an increase in ‘anti-India’ and ‘anti-Hindu’ activities in the country, including defacement by pro-Khalistan elements, and sought the intervention of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The president of the Bharat Mata Mandir in Brampton, Jeff Lal, had penned down a letter to Canadian PM Justin Trudeau regarding the concern. The letter read, "We are troubled by the alarming increase in hatred and the apparent lack of action by Canadian authorities to address this issue at its roots before it spirals out of control,” Lal said in his letter to Trudeau. It urged the prime minister “to take immediate and necessary steps to address this issue”.
The letter was issued days after a set of posters, titled “War Zone”, were spotted in front of the temple in July, 2023 . The posters targeted India’s high Commissioner to Ottawa Sanjay Kumar Verma and Consul General in Toronto Apoorva Srivastava. The incident came in continuation with another similar incident marked with Khalistani extremism. In June, another poster reportedly promoting the so-called Punjab Referendum organized by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice was also placed in front of the same temple. The posters supported an anti-India demonstration outside the Indian Consulate in Toronto on Saturday, July 8.
In a report of
'The Globe and Mail', it was mentioned about the referendum organized in July this year that, "For the past three years, the voting exercise has been a roadshow in Sikh communities. The first ballots were cast in London in October, 2021, then Rome in 2022, and Melbourne early this year. But the greatest response has been in the Greater Toronto Area." The article had further noted that,
"While the referendum’s results, which are expected in one to two years, are likely to change nothing, the exercise is having real effects on Canada’s relationship with India, causing frictions that could spread to security and trade relations between Canada and what is now the world’s most populous country."
Such is the background of the city linked to the Khalistan movement in Canada. Brampton administration has failed to provide its citizens with a peaceful living, amidst the threat of Khalistani extremism booming in the city.
