Adani Group, the developer and operator of Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), has teamed with ADB SAFEGATE through the EPC Contractor Larsen & Toubro to use Airfield 4.0 technology, ensuring advanced future capabilities as it continues development on the first phase of construction.

The airport is now one of India's largest greenfield projects, and it will use ADB SAFEGATE's most modern airfield lighting solutions to date, including AXON EQ LED lights and the LINC 360 Individual Control & Monitoring System (ILCMS).

The innovative airport lighting system prepares the greenfield airfield for Level 4 sophisticated Surface Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS) integration, which will allow sophisticated routing and guidance in the future, as well as Follow the Greens technology.

"These cutting-edge airfield technologies will enable NMIA to achieve its goal of operating their A-SMGCS at Level 4, the most advanced level of implementation based on complexity and traffic density," stated Aziz Cakir, VP ME & Africa, ADB SAFEGATE. "The new AXON lights with intelligence not only provide significant long-term maintenance benefits, but they are also best suited for the Follow the Greens concept, which allows aircraft tracking and control of a pathway with green lights for the aircraft to follow down the runway, onto the taxiway, and into the gate." When implemented, this Follow the Greens and aircraft routing and guiding would conserve power, reduce pilot navigation errors, and boost airport safety," adds Aziz Cakir.

The airport, which is expected to complete Phase 1 construction by the end of next year, promises to serve 20 million annual passengers and relieve congestion at the adjacent Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which is one of the busiest single-runway airports in the world.

NMIA, formally named D. B. Patil International Airport, has been in the works for decades, and will have two runways and three terminals arranged in the shape of a lotus, India's national flower. With an area of about 1160 hectares, it will serve as a domestic and regional hub, utilising the most advanced airport infrastructure technology.
The new Airfield 4.0 lighting system and capabilities provided by ADB SAEGATE, as part of the EPC contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T), will ensure the airport is ready for full future integrations in safety and efficiency.

Airfield 4.0 is the future of air travel, utilising smart lighting technologies, powerful cloud computing and automation tools, and digitising the airfield with new communication platforms. The new AXON EQ intelligent LED lights at the airport connect via LINC 360, the next generation of powerline communication that enables secure and reliable bidirectional interaction. With the most up-to-date smart LED-driven airfield ground lighting systems and technology, NMIA is able to highlight future service and maintenance requirements and make real-time data-driven decisions on an intelligent platform.

The airport plans to serve 60 million passengers per year and handle 1.5 million tonnes of cargo by the end of the final phase. With the expected increase in demand, innovative solutions to ensure safety and efficiency are vital for success. A digitised airfield provided by Airfield 4.0 technology will enable monitoring and real-time information exchange to provide solutions with the potential to forecast any coming concerns. The acquired data will also allow for more predictive maintenance of airport infrastructure.

NMIA will be the third such collaboration between ADB SAFEGATE and Larsen & Toubro in recent years to supply smart lighting solutions.

L&T is a key player in Indian airport design and construction, with 11 completed international airports in India and the Middle East, as well as four international airport expansion projects now in the works, in addition to the establishment of NMIA.

Adani Group is India's largest airport infrastructure developer and operator, with one in every four passengers travelling through one of their airports and accounting for 33% of the country's aviation freight volume.
