Asfaq is also seen with the girl. An eyewitness on Saturday claimed that he saw the five-year-old girl. "I saw the child with Asfaq in the market area at around 3.15 pm on Friday. He wore a blue t-shirt and saffron dhothi," Tajudeen, a daily wager at the Aluva market said on Saturday.

Based on CCTV footage, Police arrested Asfaq Alam. However, a drunk Asfaq Alam confessed that he handed over the child to a man identified as Zaheer. However, in the morning, Aslam admitted to committing the crime and told the police about the girl’s body.

As per the reports, police found her body dumped in a sack in a marshy area behind a local market in nearby Aluva today. Police said a forensics team inspected the spot and the body was sent for a post-mortem examination, which revealed evidence of sexual assault.

A police official quoting the autopsy report told PTI the five-year-old child was raped and strangulated to death.
Allegedly, on Friday, Asfaq Alam had gone to the 5-year-old's house and took her out. Alam, who had come to the locality a few days ago was a neighbour of the family. It was found that Asfaq Alum had taken the child to a shop and given her some juice after which he boarded a bus along with the child.

Ernakulam (rural) SP Vivek Kumar said, “We checked the CCTV footage, and a Bihar native, Asfaq Aslam, was found to be taking the child with him. We took him into custody at 9.30 pm.”

The SP said, “He was not in a conscious state. So we waited for a while and then questioned him for the entire night. In the morning, he confessed to having committed the crime. He showed us where he took the child to. We have found the child's body."

Raising crime against Child

The KP has released figures indicating a shocking number of 214 children killed in criminal cases over the past seven years during Pinarayi Vijayan's tenure. This concerning trend shows a notable rise in violence against children, with a staggering 31,364 incidents reported from 2016 to May 2023. Additionally, the data highlights that 9,604 children have been victims of sexual assault during this timeframe.

One concerning factor contributing to the increasing violence is the influx of migrant workers, including Bangladeshis. These migrant workers have been involved in numerous criminal cases, including 118 murder cases between 2016 and 2022, with 159 migrant workers being accused.

The gruesome rape and murder of the 5-year-old girl in Aluva in Ernakulam has called for legal introspection and the need for amendments in the existing laws as far as migrant labourers arriving in Kerala. The state government has already begun mulling over a ‘mandatory police clearance’ for migrant workers arriving in the state. The state labour department has scheduled a meeting to discuss the framework of the law.

“Sorry daughter," Kerala Police said in a tweet. “Our efforts to bring her alive to her parents were unsuccessful. The suspect who kidnapped the child was arrested," the post in Malayalam read.
