After signing a Memorandum of Understanding in June this year for the local building of submarines for the Indian Navy, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. have now linked up again for the refurbishment and modernization of the Indian submarine INS Shankush.

INS SHANKUSH is the second of four HDW Class 209 Type 1500 submarines that are still in service today. In the 1980s, the submarines were developed and handed to the Indian Navy as part of a German-Indian collaboration. After decades of service, INS SHANKUSH is scheduled for a planned expansion of its operating capabilities.

INS SHANKUSH will be renovated during the next three years in collaboration with the state-owned shipyard Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders. ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems will provide material packages of specified systems, equipment, and components, as well as on-site technical assistance and pressure hull inspection. Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders will serve as general contractor till the submarine is delivered on schedule.

Both firms have already collaborated in the delivery of large projects in India, drawing on many years of experience, knowledge, and skill.

"We look forward to working with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders again and continuing a four-decade-long tradition." This deal underlines ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' long-standing commitment to India and serves as another pillar in preserving the operating capabilities of the Indian submarine fleet," said Oliver Burkhard, CEO of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems first worked together in the 1980s, when ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems collaborated with the Indian Navy and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders to develop four diesel-electric submarines. The first two boats were built in Germany, while the third and fourth were built in India at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders factory.

ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders have previously extended the service life of one of the four Indian submarines by signing the Medium Refit Cum Life Certification (MRLC) of the first boat, INS SHISHUMAR, in 2018. After sea trials this year, the INS SHISHUMAR's renovation will be finished.

The signature of this contract for the second Indian submarine INS SHANKUSH demonstrates ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems' Services business unit's knowledge and ability in the submarine industry.

With about 7,500 workers, ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems is one of the world's major navy enterprises, engaged as a systems provider for submarines and naval surface vessels, as well as maritime electronics and security technology.
