According to the latest report, from Argentina-based magazine Pucará Comunicación, during the visit of Argentina's Defence Minister, Jorge Taiana, to India, a letter of intent for the acquisition of 20 HAL Light Combat Helicopters (LCH) Prachand will be signed. These helicopters would be deployed among the Armed Forces' three branches.

It is crucial to note, however, that this deal has not yet been verified, and developments are expected in the following days. A letter of intent does not imply a purchase contract or an obligation to complete one; it only states that the possible buyer wishes to begin the negotiating process, which might eventually lead to the signing of a contract.

The Prachand is a light attack helicopter that was unveiled in 2006. It flew for the first time on March 29, 2010, and will enter service with the Indian Armed Forces in 2021. Around 20 units have already been manufactured, with a total of 162 slated to be supplied to the Indian Air Force and Army.

While the Argentine Army has always indicated interest in attack helicopters and negotiated a batch of AH-1 Cobras from US Army stockpiles between the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, the other Argentine forces have never stated an ambition to buy helicopters of this sort. They currently have more important requirements.

They now have more immediate needs, such as replacing Fennec helicopters in the Argentine Navy and procuring new transport helicopters for the Argentine Air Force.

The biggest demand for rotary-wing aircraft in the Argentine Army, on the other hand, is in the transport category, especially to replace the ageing UH-1H and previously withdrawn Super Puma helicopters. In this context, a letter of intent was signed a few days ago during the Salon de Le Bourget for the purchase of twelve second-hand Airbus H215M helicopters (zero-hour restored) for 360 million dollars.

Taiana also met with his Indian counterpart, Rajnath Singh, during which they both emphasised their countries' strategic relationship and announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding and a training agreement that will strengthen defence cooperation.
