The European Parliament recently passed a resolution on Manipur. What was discussed? Who were the debaters? @Pamphlet_in does a deep dive to find out why the Church seems too invested in India’s internal matters. The resolution titled ‘India, the situation in Manipur’ was brought by 5 parliamentary factions.

EU Parliament

Together, they account for around 80% of the MEPs in the 705-member parliament. Several MEPs were involved in the debate: Sven Simon, Pierre Larrouturou, Alviina Alametsä, Bert-Jan Ruissen, Michaela Šojdrová, Reinhard Bütikofer, Adam Bielan, Jiří Pospíšil, Ladislav Ilčić, Miriam Lexmann, and Eugen Tomac. Let’s take a look at some of their statements.

The resolution was initiated by @larrouturou Read his tweet: “India used to be a true democracy. It's time it becomes one again.” Umm, so now those who have no locus standi in India’s internal matters will decide what consists of democracy and what does not? Fascist, much? Notably, during the debate he mentioned how NGOs working in India have been disrupted by the GoI. Which NGOs is he talking about? The ones backed by the Church and which are accused of financial irregularities and tax evasion? The law of the land must be respected. In 2022, he posted a picture while holding a placard saying “Free Teesta Setalvad and Zubair” Teesta Setalvad has been accused of fabricating evidence in the 2002 Gujarat Riots while Mohammed Zubair was arrested for hurting religious sentiments. Let’s move on to the next one - MEP @alviinaalametsa What If we told you her profile is even more interesting than Pierre's? The Finnish MP Alviina recently visited India! She participated in a discussion along with lawyer-activist Anand Grover, Prashant Bhushan, and Shahrukh Alam – and guess who hosted the talk? Foundation The London Story. FTLS has links with Jamaat and ISI and is associated with anti-India individuals such as Sunita Vishwanath and Rasheed Ahmed. (via- @DisinfoLab) Her tweets reek of Anti-India stench! In an op-ed in 2021, she stated that “India's human rights defenders deserve EU support” Which Human Rights Defenders she’s talking about? Last year, she wrote an open letter on the death anniversary of Father Stan Swamy — who was prosecuted under UAPA. In her letter, she also talks about GN Saibaba and Teesta. GN Saibaba is currently in jail for being linked with terror organizations. Next is MEP @hjaruissen, a Dutch politician, who said in the debate “Across India, those who are not Hindu, in particular Christians, are facing growing intolerance, violence, humiliation, discrimination”. Check Ruissen’s tweets, he often comments about alleged Christian human rights violations in India.

Interestingly, Ruissen hosted a conference in 2021 on the situation of Human rights in India. Shabnam Hashmi was a speaker! In 2016 Foreign funding license for Shabnam Hashmi’s NGO Anhad was revoked. Harsh Mander is a trustee of Anhad. Recently, the FCRA license of Harsh Mander’s Centre for Equity Studies was also revoked. Interestingly, in the past Harsh Mander’s NGO has received aid from Netherlands-based Partnership Foundation.
Even London Story is based in Hague, Netherlands. Ruissen also tweeted that several churches have been destroyed – a claim which was repeated by many MEPs as they try to portray Manipur violence as an attack on Christians, while it is the Kuki tribe, consisting of mostly Christians, who have been the violent one. Ethnic clashes broke out in Manipur following a rally organized by ATSU to protest against Meiteis’ demand of being included in the list of Scheduled Tribes. Protestors started burning tires and other objects on the roads, which then led to arson and violence. These recent protests were triggered by a Manipur High Court order on 27 March, directing the Manipur state government to submit recommendations to the Union government for the inclusion of Meitei in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list. Perhaps European Parliament would be better off fixing the issues at home instead of trying to interfere in India’s internal matters.
