Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan on Sunday said that pregnant women should start chanting the 'Sunderkand' and start reading epics like the Ramayana to ensure the mental and physical well-being of their babies.Soundararajan, who is not only the governor, but also a gynecologist and fetal therapist, made these remarks during the launch of the 'Garbha Sanskar' program organised by an RSS-linked body.
In the 'Garbha Sanskar' program, initiated by Samvardhinee Nyas, the doctors associated with the organisation provide expectant mothers with a blend of "scientific and traditional" prescriptions to give birth to babies.
During the virtual launch event, Soundararajan commended the efforts of Samvardhinee Nyas in developing the 'Garbha Sanskar' program and expressed her belief that this "scientific and holistic approach" to pregnancy would yield positive results.
She said, "“In villages, we have seen expectant mothers reading Ramayana, Mahabharata and other epics as well as good stories. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, there is a belief that pregnant ladies should learn Sunderkandam of Kamba Ramayana.”
Soundararajan believes that chanting "Sunderkand" during pregnancy would be beneficial for the babies. As per information, Sunderkand is a chapter in the Hindu epic, Ramayana, that illustrates the adventures of Lord Hanuman and his selflessness, strength, and devotion to Lord Rama.
Soundararajan, who also serves as the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, highlighted that while the scientific approach focuses on preventing complications during pregnancy, a holistic approach can contribute to the birth of healthy and sound babies.
She further stated that practicing yoga during pregnancy promotes the physical and mental well-being of both the expectant mother and the baby, ultimately aiding in a normal delivery. Soundararajan also emphasised the importance of motherhood and the 'Garbha Sanskar' program.
Leena Gahane, co-head of the intellectual wing of the Rashtra Sevika Samiti, expressed her appreciation for the launch of the 'Garbha Sanskar' module on the occasion of the 350th death anniversary of Jijabai ji, who is also known as Rajmata - Shivaji Maharaj's mother.
She expressed hope that the implementation of the program would help nurture the next generation with qualities similar to Shivaji Maharaj, the renowned founder of the Maratha Empire.
According to a senior functionary of the organisation, the 'Garbha Sanskar' program will be implemented nationwide by doctors associated with Samvardhinee Nyas.
Speaking to the reporters of PTI, Samvardhinee Nyas functionary said, “For this, we have divided the country into five regions and in each of the five regions there will be a team of 10 doctors who will implement the programme. Each of these doctors will start with taking up 20 cases of pregnancy in their respective regions.”
To oversee the program's implementation, an eight-member central team comprising ayurvedic, homeopathy, and allopathy doctors, as well as a subject expert, has been formed, she added.
