Story of Two Army Dogs: Who Will Be Your Role Model?

Well, dogs have many lessons for all of us. All over the world, dogs are used for military purposes in various ways. Indian Army has been doing that. You must have heard the story of Army dogs who were deployed in anti-terrorist operations in Kashmir valley.

 

This is the story of two dogs. Labrador. Both brothers. Born on the same day, same parents. One was Dheeru and other was Dileep. Now the story goes to first person mode, as it was narrated by a Military Veteran to me.

 

 

“I was detailed for a dog trainers’ course. My dog was Dheeru. Dheeru was a bit shy but decent dog and training was going on smoothly. Dileep, brother of Dheeru was allotted to another officer. Dileep was more agile, alert and energetic dog. As luck could have played the role, the officer who was training Dileep had to drop out the course due to some operational reasons. So, Dileep was without any trainer. It was allotted to me only, bit unofficially because my evaluation was to be on Dheeru only.

 

I told the Training officer that I will not be able to give any time to Dileep and he assured me that some additional trainer will come to take Dileep. However, nobody came and both the dogs continued with me only. My focus remained on Dheeru only.

 

I took Dheeru with me for training every morning, Dileep came along. I give the word of Command to Dheeru, Dileep followed automatically. While I was training Dheeru, Dileep was getting trained automatically. In fact, every one was surprised.

 

Evaluation day came. It was a tense day.

 

I took Dheeru out for the test. Dheeru did well and so do I.

 

The Evaluator saw Dileep and asked about the trainer of the dog.

 

My training officer, pointed out at me. However, the evaluator pointed out that I have been evaluated on another dog. The Training officer explained the entire scenario to the evaluator.

 

I was told to get another evaluation on Dileep. It was outstanding result. The evaluator asked me and I told him the entire scenario that without any focus of mine, Dileep was such an outstanding learner. He learned on my word of command by observing Dheeru.

 

He was amazed.

 

I owned Dheeru and Dileep owned me.

 

To cut the story short, both Dheeru and Dileep did extremely well as Avalanche Rescue Operation Dogs in Kashmir valley and both won the gallantry award. Proud moments for me.”

 

Let me extrapolate this story in corporate setting where most of us are working? In this challenging environment, who will be your role model?

 

What will be your answer?

 

You can not disregard Dheeru, who was all sincere and did his task diligently.

 

However, what about Dileep? Even when his trainer did not focus on him, he never let him down, he learned by observing Dheeru and his trainer. More credit to him.
