Hiroshima, May 20: PM Narendra Modi held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on the sidelines of the ongoing G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan. This is the first meeting between the two leaders since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began last year. Indian Prime Minister’s Office shared the pictures from the bilateral meeting.
National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Indian diplomats were also present with PM Modi as he had the meeting with President Zelensky. The Ukrainian President also had his advisors and diplomats in the meeting.
India has pushed for peace between Russia and Ukraine through diplomatic solutions. PM Modi called the crisis an issue of humanity. Earlier, G7 leaders stood in support of Ukraine and issued a statement and called Russia’s aggression ‘illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked’. The venue for G7 Summit, Hiroshima was affected by a major nuclear attack during World War 2 and stands as a symbol of peace. India, while abstaining from voting against Russia at the UN, has called for peace between the two nations at war, and has also assisted Ukraine with food supplies and resources. PM Modi reportedly extended his support to President Zelenksy in the bilateral meeting.
Earlier, in a telephonic conversation with President Zelensky in October 2022, PM Modi pushed for ‘no military solution’ to the crisis. PM Modi also had a conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin and said that this is not an era of war. PM Modi also held bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The Indian Prime Minister also shared a warm hug with US President Joe Biden.
