In yet another incident, the state treasurer of the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) SC/ST Wing was brutally killed by a group of miscreants while he was returning from Chennai. The incident took place on the night of 27 April (Thursday).
The person has been identified as PPG Shankar. Shankar hails from Valarpuram area next to Sriperumbudur in Kanchipuram district. He was the President of Varapuram Panchayat Council and the State Treasurer of BJP Tamil Nadu Scheduled Caste wing.
As per the reports, on Thursday night, when he was travelling in his car on the Chennai-Bengaluru National Highway, a gang of at least four men hurled country bombs at the vehicle. In the impact, he lost control of the car. Shankar got down from the car and ran away. The gang chased him and hacked him to death in full public view.
Police personnel have been deployed in Valarpuram village to avoid any untoward incidents. Shankar was to participate in the seventh death anniversary of BJP functionary Venkatesan on Friday.
PPG Shankar’s brother (some reports say friend) PPG Kumaran, who was Sriperumbudur’s union councilor and a businessman was hacked to death by rowdies in the same manner (with bombs thrown and armed gang hacking to death) in October 2012.
Expressing shock and grief at the incident, BJP state president K Annamalai said that this was one more indication of the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. He added that if proper investigation was not done and the culprits not caught immediately, the party would hold protests across the state.
