COVID-19, the pandemic was a bolt from the blue that took the world by storm in early 2020. The impact it caused was unprecedented and severe. Panic and fear had become the norm of the day all across the globe. The medical fraternity along with the governments of nations were groping in dark to deal with the wild and invisible monster called COVID-19.

It proved to be so powerful and dynamic that it halted industries, businesses, schools, colleges, entertainment, and travel and relegated people indoors. Loss of livelihood, social isolation, and general uncertainty of the future impacted the behavioral and cognitive abilities of the majority of the population. United Nations, governments, experts of disaster management or anyone had never come across such a situation. There were no Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to fall back upon.

A silver lining to this pandemic was that it brought the entire humanity together to fight against the disease. In our nation, industries, social organizations, and volunteers came forward to support the overworked health infrastructure and administrative machinery of government.

RSS Jankalyan Samiti and Vivek SPARC were also contributing to helping the local government in the areas of health, education, and providing employment and social sectors. Without bothering about the consequences, the volunteers of these organizations selflessly came forward and provided relief to the most neglected and underprivileged sections of society. Their micro-level planning and execution by mobilizing the various resources helped to minimize the effect of covid in Western Maharashtra, specifically the worst-affected cities like Mumbai and Pune.

Their exemplary work is an inspiration for future generations. RSS Jankalyan Samiti and Vivek SPARC documented this exemplary work of social organisations during COVID-19 under the project CARe (Covid Assistance Research documentation). The documentation can be used for reference in case of future pandemics or disasters by administrators, military organizations, voluntary organizations, and educational institutions. It will be available in the form of inspirational stories of a few unsung heroes and organizations whose contribution was unique during Covid times.

Case studies are well-researched documentation. With no language barrier, they are both English and the regional language, Marathi. It was a challenge for researchers to collect the primary data for these case studies as collection or recording of data was not on priority during Covid times. But by extensive filtration from news of 10 newspapers, 1100 articles from the newspapers and journals published during Covid times, the secondary data was collected for writing case studies. Field visits to the rural and urban areas of districts were been conducted. Information was also collected in the form of interviews with representatives of the voluntary organizations along with volunteers.

Case studies in English are going to be published on April 12, 2023, at the Convention Centre of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. The launch of case studies will be followed by a national conference on ‘Disaster Resilient Methodologies for Pandemic’. Dr Jitendra Singh will be the Chief Guest of this conference. A digital platform (CARe website) will also be available to access the information globally.
