The man who fired the first shot at Umesh Pal -- Vijay Chaudhary alias Usman -- was gunned down in an encounter with Prayagraj police early on Monday. On the basis of a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal's wife Jaya Pal, a case was registered against Atiq Ahmed, his brother Ashraf, his wife Shaista Parveen, two sons, aides Guddu Muslim and Gulam, and nine others. Earlier, when the Umesh Pal killing was discussed in the state Assembly, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had said gangsters would be ground into the dust. "Mitti mein mela denge," he had said in Hindi. As many as 160 criminal cases have been lodged against Atiq Ahmed's family members, according to Uttar Pradesh Police. Atiq has been named in 100 cases, while his brother Ashraf has 52 cases, his wife Shaista Praveen has three, and sons Ali and Umar Ahmad have four and one cases, respectively, against them.

Meanwhile, Ahmed's wife has moved a court claiming their two minor sons are missing since they were picked up by the police recently. The police said the two boys were lodged inside a juvenile detention center but Ahmed's wife, Shaista Parveen, has argued that they were not found there.
