New Delhi, Mar 29: In a significant development, the first batch of 2,585 naval Agniveers including 273 women Agniveers passed out from an Indian Navy training establishment in Odisha on Tuesday. This comes as the first operationalising of the four-year soldier recruitment scheme "Agnipath" launched by the NDA-led government last year.
Earlier, the Indian Navy stated, "The passing out parades marks the successful completion of training of close to 2600 Agniveers including 273 women Agniveers undergoing training at Chilka," adding that the successful trainees would be deployed on frontline warships for their Sea training.
As many as 2,585 Agniveers of the Indian Navy passed out from in a first of its kind ceremonial, post sunset Passing Out Parade at INS Chilka under the aegis of Southern Naval Command. They had begun their training in November 2022. This first batch of Agniveers also includes those women and men Agniveers who were part of the Indian Navy Republic Day Parade Contingent at the Kartavya Path.
"This day is historic also because we have the first ever batch of women sailors passing out. As the nation watches, our women sailors will provide inspiration to an entire generation of young women in the country" said Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar, who reviewed the parade.
Though passing out parades are traditionally conducted in the morning hours, it was the first occasion when the PoP was conducted post-sunset, a first-of-its-kind in the Indian Armed Forces.
