New Delhi, March 27 : Days after the Khalistani extremist breached the security of Indian missions in Canada despite the presence of police, India summoned Canadian High Commissioner and conveyed its strong concerns about the incident.
The country sought explanation over separatist and extremist elements against India's diplomatic Mission and Consulates in Canada this week.
"The High Commissioner of Canada was summoned yesterday to convey our strong concern about the actions of separatist and extremist elements against our diplomatic Mission and Consulates in Canada this week. The Government of India sought an explanation on how such elements were allowed, in the presence of police, to breach the security of our diplomatic Mission and Consulates," MEA said.
"The Government of Canada was reminded of its obligations under the Vienna Convention, and asked to arrest and prosecute the individuals who have already been identified as being involved in such acts. It is expected that the Canadian Government will take all steps which are required to ensure the safety of our diplomats and security of our diplomatic premises so that they are able to fulfil their normal diplomatic functions," a statement by MEA read.
It should be noted Canada has seen a rise in anti-India activities recently by Khalistan supporters. On Sunday last,India's High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma was forced to skip an event in British Columbia province after a violent protest by Khalistan supporters. Indian-origin journalist Sameer Kaushal, who was at the venue to cover the protest, was also assaulted by protesters.
Notably, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was defaced and spraypainted with pro-Khalistan and anti-India graffiti in Canada's Ontario. The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday near the City Hall in the town of Hamilton.
