Anti-encroachment drive turns violent in Bihar

Patna, Feb 16: An anti-encroachment drive in Bihar's capital city turned violent with shopkeepers pelting stones at the policemen who arrived to vacate their establishment. As the situation escalated in Patna's Gulzarbagh, a vendor reportedly immolated himself and was rushed to a medical facility in Delhi with severe burn injuries.

Videos from the spot showed policemen trying to douse the flames on the shopkeeper using clothes and mats after he set himself on fire. After the local shopkeepers gathered and pelted stones at the cops in large numbers, the personnel also responded by throwing rocks back at them.
 
 
 
The policemen arrived in the area accompanied by JCBs to clear the illegal encroachments that stood on railway land. They faced tough resistance from the shopkeepers who reacted violently to the police action. However, Thursday's anti-encroachment drive is yet to be confirmed by the Indian Railways, Times Network's Aditya reported.
